The last few weeks were busy with excitement and intensity as several European nations played at UEFA 2012 Championships, which were being hosted in key cities in both Poland and Ukraine. We would like to congratulate Spain for winning the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship!
NewspaperDirect was pleased to be a part of the excitement by providing newspapers to teams, families and fans during the event. We received several large orders from various publishers and clients for daily delivery of newspapers at all game venues across both host countries. Our local Partners, Internews Poland and AS-Media LLC Ukraine, working diligently throughout the duration of the Championship to fulfill all of the newspaper orders and special requests made by each of the clients and publishers.
NewspaperDirect supplied publications to four major cities in Poland, including Warsaw, Wroclaw, Gdansk and Poznan, as well as the following cities in Ukraine – Kyiv, Donetsk, Kharkiv and Lviv, where we supplied all the media centers at each venue with a broad selection of daily European titles. We are very pleased to announce a new Partner that has joined NewspaperDirect’s print-on-demand Network, Ziya Ltd in Azerbaijan’s capital city, Baku.
Just in time for Europe’s much-anticipated EuroVision Song Contest 2012, Ziya Ltd. is now fully operational and has the production capabilities to provide their customers with NewspaperDirect’s complete selection of over 2,000 titles that are currently available.
Baku will be bustling with activity over the next several days as more and more tourists and EuroVision participants start populating the city. The large influx of visitors will provide a huge opportunity for the Partner to promote their business and gain some excellent exposure within the marketplace. The Partner plans on capitalizing on this event by providing all of Baku’s major hotels and retail outlets with Day A newspapers from all over the world.

Welcome back to our blog – I hope that everyone has had a successful 2012 so far.
Several of our Partners have been attending business development events and also increasing their marketing efforts. Over the next several blog posts we will be sharing with all of you what’s been going on throughout our network.
Here is a good one about our Partner in Switzerland, YourMail – enjoy!
In March 2012, our Swiss partner benefited from the 82nd Annual Geneva International Motor Show which took place in Geneva from March 8th-18th. Presenting some 150 World and European premiers for 10 days to the public, the show enjoyed the extensive international visibility of more than 700,000 visitors and almost 12,000 journalists. For the duration of the event YourMail secured a sponsorship by the car manufacturer, Jaguar. By providing a full back page ad to Jaguar, the manufacturer sponsored newspapers to several exclusive hotels in the area. Our ND Partner was able to supply these papers at a very low cost to hotels, and thus newspaper orders increased significantly during the show.
In addition YourMail supplied newspapers to several Board of Director and general meetings of UBS Bank and REBA Bank in March. These bank meetings contribute to raise YourMail’s sales in March by 57%, and also created an excellent opportunity to promote the ND service in the bank sector in Switzerland.

Please join me in welcoming the newest Partner in the ND Distribution Network, Stuart Shepherd from The Magazine Marketing Co Ltd (TMMC) in New Zealand.
The Partner joined NewspaperDirect in September 2011 and has been providing key newspaper titles to New Zealand residents and travelers since then. Stuart was quick to recognize a very promising opportunity in his region and decided to move forward with a new roll-fed production printer, which is located in Wellington. He also has our ND PrintStation set up in Auckland.
TMMC is New Zealand’s premier agent for magazine publishers from around the globe – including everything from New Zealand’s largest mass market weeklies such as TV Guide, through to highly specialized magazines across multiple categories such as architecture, design, literacy and sports. Magazine Marketing Co Ltd’s subscription service provides access to over 300,000 domestic and international magazines and journals to consumers, businesses, schools and libraries.
TMMC has only recently launched NewspaperDirect in NZ and has already had some great feedback and an extremely positive response. The company has been distributing newspapers to various bookstores across New Zealand and has developed key marketing collateral to inform subscribers of the vast list of newspapers that are now available via ND.
The launch of NewspaperDirect in New Zealand was also highlighted at the Libraries Conference 2011 which was held in Wellington from October 30th to November 2nd. The Partner attends the Conference every year to showcase all of their products and information, and also keep up to date with the trends and development in the Library industry. Using the show as an excellent opportunity to launch the NewspaperDirect portion of their business, the Partner used their booth space to display and give away posters, title lists, and newspaper samples, as well as discuss the service one-on-one with some key attendees at the Conference.
In addition to the Library segment, TMMC is also focusing on a few other key markets. Says Stuart, “Currently TMMC is concentrating on marketing NewspaperDirect within the hospitality industry, with a key focus on distributing to various cafes in NZ. Next year we plan on offering home delivery services to cater to the consumer market. It has been a great start and a steep learning curve in regards to the logistics and delivery and production for everyone involved and we look forward to making NewspaperDirect a real success within New Zealand.”

We are very pleased to announce that the Financial Times awarded NewspaperDirect with the Distributor of the Year award for 2011. The award was presented at the Financial Time’s annual celebration dinner during the Distripress Congress in Barcelona in October 2011.

At a time where most distributors are noticing drops in circulation and sales, NewspaperDirect’s expansive Partner network has been pushing through the woes of the newspaper industry and has successfully generated a double-digit increase in overall FT print circulation, compared Q1, Q2 and Q3 of 2010.

One of our Partner’s in South America, Marcio Loducca of NewspaperDirect Brazil, recently exhibited at the Equipotel tradeshow in Sao Paulo. Here are his comments and some pictures of the event:
Equipotel is the biggest hospitality trade show in Brazil and the 5th largest in the world, and widely targets all sectors of the hospitality industry including hotels, restaurants and hospitals. While the greater majority of attendees are from Brazil, Equipotel is also attended by people from Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay.
The tradeshow was help from September 12 -15 at Sao Paulo’s 55,000 sq. ft. Centro de Convenções Anhembi (Anhembi Exhibition Center), which is the largest event space in all of Latin America.
We have exhibited in previous years as well and felt that it was important to once again have a presence at the event, and continue to build the NewspaperDirect brand within Brazil. The Equipotel fair provides an excellent opportunity to showcase all of our services and offerings, and build new relationships with key players in the hospitality industry. Our objective for this show was to develop key contacts within the sporting events industry and tap into potential deals and contracts for the upcoming events in Brazil – World Cup 2014 and Olympic Games 2016.
In comparison to previous years, we have found that the main shift this year is that the hospitality industry is becoming more and more saturated with the younger generation. We are seeing more young adults and even several students at the show, representing their organizations and playing a key role in the decision making process. Our hotel industry has been slowly but surely changing, as with the rest of the world, and institutional tradeshows like Equipotel offer a wide variety of valuable resources for people that are looking for new and unique services for their establishments and help these properties become more streamlined with what our visitors have come to expect during their travels to Brazil.
For our booth design this year, we decided to take more of a creative approach and promote the luxury amenity services that we can provide with printed newspapers. As you can see in the pictures below, we bundled the printed newspapers with a fresh flower bouquet into an attractive package – we found that this was a very appealing strategy and many of our customers were drawn to our booth because of this. Based on the positive feedback we have received from our booth visitors, we will be working on a few different luxury bundling strategies in the near future to create a stronger appeal for our hotel customers.
In addition to our newspaper print-and-deliver service, our staff was also fully equipped with everything they needed to promote ND Press and Hotel PressDisplay to the appropriate customers.
